A staff member has lost or had their work phone stolen. Is there anything you can do to protect work and personal data stored on it?
Firstly, should the business have a plan in place for quick implementation to safeguard data?
What if you don’t have an IT department? Can the staff member still Lock the phone themselves?
And lastly, what if the phone is never returned, how do you retrieve the data, photos, contacts and other things that you rely on finding in your phone?
The simple answer is yes, IT departments can access programs that allow remote Locks and also anyone has the ability to Lock their own phone. But crucially, it’s vital to back up your phone and remember your passwords!
The Importance of Regular Backups
Losing a phone also means losing valuable photos, contacts, message groups and even your stored cards if you haven’t backed up recently. Most smartphones offer backup options to cloud services like Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone). By enabling these services, you can easily restore data to a new device with minimal loss but take care to check what is included in the backup as some things, like government logins, will not be restored. Also check if you can set an automated Back Up Schedule to make it even easier.
Remembering Your Passwords for Remote Access
To lock your phone remotely, you’ll need to access your Apple or Google account from another device. This requires knowing your login credentials, which is why having a secure way to remember passwords is essential. Using a password manager or keeping a written backup (stored securely) will allow you to access important accounts without the physical device in hand.
